Women's Equality Day

On this Women’s Equality Day, we honor the women who came before us and fought for change.

From our founder, Rachel: This is me with my great-grandmother, Sylvia. I was lucky enough to know this special woman for the first 11 years of my life. I have wonderful memories of going to visit her in her apartment in Elizabeth, NJ, reading books together, "helping" her when she was cooking up something delicious in the kitchen.

She was also an entrepreneur. At time when many women didn't work outside of the home, Sylvia had her own gift shop. She started selling out of her home, and eventually she did well enough to get her own storefront.

I wish she was still here so I could ask her what inspired her to open her shop? Did she face a lot of adversity as a woman business-owner? What advice would she give me as I begin my own journey as an entrepreneur?
I do know this. Having her as a role model, knowing that she forged her own path in a time when a lot of doors were closed to her, is a gift. A gift of what's possible against the odds, a gift of strength, and a gift of perseverance.

Who are your role models?
